The city of Sokcho is successfully transitioning from a traditional summer-centric resort into a vibrant, year-round tourism hub. Recent big data analysis from the Korea Tourism Data Lab reveals a significant upward trend in both tourism spending and visitor demand during what were previously considered "off-season" months.
According to the data, Sokcho’s annual tourism expenditure reached 646.7 billion KRW in 2025, marking a 3.7% increase from the previous year. Navigation search data, a key indicator of travel intent, also saw steady growth, with searches rising by 3.0% to reach over 5.7 million hits in 2025. Notably, the surge was most prominent during the first five months of the year and the fourth quarter, with Q4 search rates jumping by an impressive 14.2% compared to 2024.
This shift is attributed to Sokcho’s strategic diversification of its tourism portfolio. While the city’s beaches remain a major draw, the focus has expanded toward content-based inland tourism. Key drivers include the thriving Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, the unique cultural heritage of Abai Village, and the newly developed "Seorak Hyang-giro" trail in Seorak-dong.
The city has also stayed ahead of modern travel trends by introducing "Workation" and "Learncation" programs, appealing to digital nomads and families alike. Additionally, the Yeongrangho Cherry Blossom Festival, held for two consecutive years, has established itself as a premier spring attraction, drawing massive crowds during the early months of the year.
Looking ahead, Sokcho plans to further enhance its "stay-over" tourism infrastructure. Upcoming projects include the Seorak Mountain Cultural Complex, which aims to revitalize Seorak-dong as a base for extended stays, and the expansion of night tourism content along the coastal belt connecting Cheongho Beach, Sokcho Beach, and the "Bada Hyang-giro" trail.
"Our next step is to evolve into a city where visitors don't just pass through, but stay and immerse themselves in diverse experiences," a city official stated. "We are committed to achieving both quantitative and qualitative growth by continuously discovering innovative cultural and wellness content."
